Hunga-Tonga Hunga-Ha'apai Volcanic Eruptions and Tsunami Disaster Relief

Donate Now

On January 15th, 2022 an underwater volcano erupted north of the main island of Tongatapu. The eruption occurred in Ha’apai and spread through to all islands. Most communication has been severed, but connections have been made via sat phones.  According to early reports, a four-foot tsunami wave hit Tonga’s capital, Nuku’alofa, and much of the northern coast of Tongatapu and the coastline of ‘Eua has been devastated. Moreover, a heavy layer of volcanic ash has coated the ground and the air quality is making it difficult to breathe.

We are seeking donations to support local organizations aiding disaster relief efforts. Since we have 501c(3) status and donations in the United States are tax deductible, we wanted to offer an avenue for those wishing to offer aid. To date, we have funded over $30,000 USD in water, sanitation, and hygiene (W.A.S.H.) services, food security programming, agricultural support programming, and mental health support for communities impacted by the tsunami.

Friends of Tonga is continuing to identify reputable organizations to partner with to help Tongan communities impacted by this natural disaster. As we learn more about the damage caused and the need throughout Tonga, organizations on the ground will be able to determine the best way to direct these funds.
